Hard Water Contamination In Homes Costs Unseen Thousands

MILLSTON, Wis.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Homeowners are ever looking for ways to make their houses more energy efficient to, quite simply, save money. Unfortunately, too many residents overlook a crucial factor that ruins costly appliances, destroys clothing, spurs excessive spending in personal products, and corrupts the very infrastructure of their home. That factor? Hard water.

Hard water contains superfluous minerals, most typically calcium and magnesium, and can be pulled from a well, lake or river. Hard water affects about 90% of Americans.

Limestone “scale” forms to create deposits that block narrow tubing in refrigerator ice makers, causing valves to stick and hoses to burst. Scale blocks the flow of water into water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines, severely impacting their efficiency and causing components to overheat and burn out.

Soap does not lather in hard water and forms a scum that is difficult to rinse away. Immovable stains appear in laundry as minerals in hard water bond permanently with minerals in soils and perspiration. Fibers in clothing are damaged quickly, growing harsh and scratchy, and the life of expensive garments are shortened considerably.

When bathing, that soap scum affects skin and hair, making it dry, dull and itchy, and requiring pricey moisturizers and conditioners to negate. Those products often irritate sensitive skin.

Scale forms inside shower heads and faucets and throughout a home’s pipes, clogging water flow and destroying metal, resulting in massive repairs or replacement.
