Dirty Hair…Can it Actually be Healthier?

Back in the day I can remember that my mom (and all of her friends) would make weekly trips to the hair salon for a wash and style. Aside from the social event, it was the routine for most women in the 50s through the 70s and even continues for some “white-hairs” today. Somehow, in my generation we decided that weekly washing alone was not healthy, and we went to the other extreme of daily washing and letting our “hair flow free”. Well…”the times they are a-changin’” once more. What we won’t do to have beautifully full, shiny locks! Living longer though means that we not only want shiny hair, but to keep what we have…and more of us are looking into a natural hair loss treatment.

Our hair washing routine (or lack of) has now be changed by the availability of dry shampoos (which have actually been around since the 60s but like tie dye is baaack) and blowouts. Greasy locks can be tamed by a bit of baby powder or spray-on dry shampoo in a can. My hair dresser actually insists that I come to her with two to three days’ worth of dirt before she applies color. She says that the dye holds better, but I think it just makes me appreciate her more when I walk out with bouncier, cleaner hair!

Blowouts are a throwback to the days of affordable style without having to do it yourself, and now at about $30-$40 per one hour (or less) session, more and more women are returning to salons in droves. But that is not all we are taking advantage of in salons. Some are also touting female hair loss treatments either in-house or they are selling the latest in the laser hair brush for hair loss products. Fuller looking hair is once again a status symbol of not only health, but youth and confidence as well.

At some time though…we DO need to wash our tresses…or do we? Most of us have heard that coloring and blow drying hair strips the hair shafts of oil and any natural protection against breakage. Now, shampoo itself is getting a bad rap. Salons and experts are saying that sulfate-free is the way to go, and so with no suds or detergents to bubble away the oil and dirt, we are depending on other chemicals to take away the grime.

The latest, however just requires that we apply a creamy formula made of natural oils and aloe vera to wet hair, comb it through and as we rinse, away goes dirt. Seems that aloe vera attaches itself to grease and dirt and the natural oils replenish what we are taking away. I am currently looking for this formula, but it must be a closely guarded secret! NO secret however is the fact that as we age, we are losing hair. Whether it is due to shampooing, coloring, blowdrys or blowouts or just plain breakage due to stress, we need to invest in a thinning hair treatment that will work for us.

Nutreve’s Personal Laser Hair Therapy device is a laser hair brush for hair loss that is right up there with the latest in trends. This laser hair therapy for women or men contains 32 actual cool light lasers in a soft, curved surfaced “brush” with an ergonomic grip handle. These lasers stimulate the flow of blood to each hair follicle at just the correct depth for maximum benefit. Each follicle is therefore nourished and stimulated to produce the thickest and strongest hair shaft possible. It also comes with a hands free stand that allows for ease of use and multi-tasking….its like bringing a salon right to your own home! Used along with a form of cleaning your scalp that removes excess oil yet not too much, your follicles will be happier and healthier than ever. We might be able to have healthier hair without looking “dirty”.
