We are reaching a time when younger and younger people are losing hair because of stress. Even people as young as 25 have relentless schedules that take a toll on their bodies. They first notice a thinning of the hair around their face and a lot of hair coming out in the shower or in their brush. When it seems to get out of control then some are turning to doctors that are specialists in thinning hair treatment and especially natural hair loss treatment. According to these specialists, about 20% (and mostly women) are concluding that their hair changes are due to stress. Hair loss is the result of a busy lifestyle, and in a vicious cycle, the worry about losing their hair causes even more stress. In other words, stress causes hair loss, which causes stress which makes for a more rapid loss of hair. When a woman or man starts out with full, shiny beautiful hair and they start to see it fall out in clumps or on their pillow in the morning it can be a blow to our self esteem! Aside from improving our diet (make sure to get enough vitamin B, D and zinc) and getting more sleep, Rogaine and other medications can be taken. Stopping use of blow dryers with excessive heat and other manual or chemical mistreatment of our hair can begin to ease the problem as well. We can also have our hormone levels tested as the adrenal glands produce more adrenalin under stress and this can cause a buildup of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone in our hair producing follicles. Normal amounts are counterbalanced by our own bodies, but excessive stress can cause premature balding as well as thinning.

Now the FDA has approved the use of laser hair therapy to stimulate low-producing or dormant follicles to produce a thicker hair shaft. When opening the package and examining the contents, read the directions and familiarize yourself with the charging procedure and operational instructions contained in the package.  Always follow the safety instructions included.

Any laser hair therapy device commercially sold or provided for use in the US must contain an FDA label indicating its conformity to government regulations.  If the device you bought doesn’t have such a label, it may not be legal to be sold in the US.

The Nutreve Personal Laser Hair Therapy has a recommended use protocol of no more than every other day for 15 minutes or more.  Skipping a day between uses is believed to give the scalp the ability to rest and restore after the stimulation of Low Level Laser Light energy.

The duration of use will be determined by the area to be tested.  In other words, a person with thinning hair in a fairly small defined area would use the laser for one cycle of 15 minutes per session.  A person with a larger area of thinning hair might use the laser for two 15-minute cycles.

We think a good reference tool would be using palm of the hand.  An area the size of the palm should be adequately treated with one 15-minute cycle.  Two palm size areas require two 15-minute cycles and so on.

How to use the Nutreve Low Level Laser Hair Therapy Device:  whether holding it by the handle or using the optional Nutreve Personal Laser Hair Therapy Stand, the device should lay comfortably against the scalp.  It can either be moved slowly against the scalp or simply held in place for a minute or two.

Unlike other handheld lasers, the Nutreve Low Level Laser Hair Therapy Device does not require your arm to be suspended in space to use it.  Simply holding the curve shape close to the head moving it back and forward makes it easier and less tedious to use than other devices.

Once the Nutreve Personal Laser Hair Therapy is fully charged using the plug-in charger that comes with it, simply turn the device on by first hitting the power button, which illuminates the 15-minute cycle and then pressing the start button and as you can see the timer’s counting down.

If you’re called away for any reason and need to stop treatment, simply hit the button again and the timer will hold in place until you’re ready to come back and use it.  Starting it again will allow you to continue treatment.

When the treatment is done and the timer is fully counted down, it will switch off.  If you’re ready to do another session, simply start it again all over.

Understand the Plight of Women Suffering from Hair Loss

In the meantime, you can read these articles so that you may better understand the plight of the women in your life, and garner a little more insight into what may be on the minds of your spouse, sister, mom, co-worker, girlfriend or even your daughter.)

Hair loss can be sudden, or it can start with subtle thinning around the hairline. The reasons can be medical, physical, environmental or emotional. Losing hair may be caused by a medical condition known as Alopecia. This condition may be temporary (Alopecia Areata) or permanent (Alopecia Totalis).

Women’s hair loss may also be the result of prescribed drugs for other problems. In the area of physical reasons, there are the issues of physical trauma, burns or scarring. Environmental issues such as chemicals, radioactivity, extreme temperature or even poor diet can be a culprit.

Finally, emotional trauma can not only have our bodies negatively reacting to stress, but also contribute to hair twisting and hair pulling as nervous activities.

As you can see, not only are there four basic areas of concern, these areas interact to sometimes heighten the amount of hair loss experienced…which, in turn may lead to even more loss of hair. For example, medication may be given for a medical issue, hair is lost, the patient is physically and now emotionally stressed, depression sets in and more medicines are taken. The cycle becomes “vicious” and many of these female victims cannot find their way out.

Hopefully the following information will shed some light on not only possible causes, but possible solutions as well. Let’s get started with an overview of HOW ANY of the above causes of thinning hair or hair loss in women can happen.

How does hair grow and what causes it to stop?

Hair is formed in follicles which are “bulbs” located below the upper layer of skin. They contain the root of the growing hair shaft and are fed by elements in our blood. Proper nourishment will ensure a strong, healthy hair to grow through four phases.

There is the 3-6 year growth phase (when hair grows approximately 6 inches a year), a 1-2 week transition phase and a 5-6 week resting phase (while waiting for a new hair to form) and a return to growth phase (while the new hair grows and pushes out the old hair shaft). This can be compared to the growth of our teeth (we get baby teeth, then after a while new tooth buds form and they come up and push out the baby teeth and become our permanent teeth)…except this hair cycle continues over and over again throughout our lifetime.

Hair growth is stopped by either the closing off of the follicle, lack of nourishment to the follicle, or physical trauma to the follicle. The chemical DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is  naturally occurring testosterone (good) changed by an enzyme produced in a female’s adrenal glands and ovaries to one which attaches to weak follicles and chokes them off (bad).

Natural sebum and oil buildup can also physically block the follicle. Poor blood circulation in the scalp to the root of the hair causes less “food” to be delivered to feed the follicle. Unfortunately, some trauma (physical injury) cannot be avoided, but that caused by poor habits can. This stopping or slowing and “miniaturization” of the follicles is what we see as thinning, hair loss and balding.

Normally there are about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on an adult head and we may naturally lose about 100 hairs a day with our body generating this same number of new hairs a day on a healthy head. However, with slowed growth, weakened hair shafts and dying follicles the problems begin to show.

Drugs and Hair Loss

Medications that your doctor prescribes are used to maintain your health or treat a specific medical condition, but can come with unwanted side effects.  Some drugs trigger hair growth in unwanted areas, changes in color or texture, or cause hair loss.

Like any other type of hair loss, drug-induced hair loss can have a detrimental effect on your confidence and self-esteem.

Thankfully, in the vast majority of cases, the hair loss issue resolves once the medication is discontinued.  For some patients who are on chronic medications for the long term or who are also experiencing hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), the battle may become slightly tougher to fight.

The type of drug, dosage and underlying conditions may influence the severity of hair loss and the prognosis.  Some drugs, like chemotherapy agents, cause immediate hair loss beginning within a few days or weeks of taking the medication.  However, the most common type of drug-induced hair loss starts 8-16 weeks after starting the medication.

In my clinical practice, the most common classes of medications I see that are prone to triggering hair loss are: anti-cholesterol medications (especially statins), anti-hypertensives (blood pressure lowering medications like beta-blockers), mood modulators (anti-depressants/anti-anxiety agents), and hormones (like thyroid, testosterone or birth control pills).

A large number of medications are thought to be linked with hair loss. Here are a few main categories:

• Acne medications containing vitamin A (retinoids)
• Antibiotics and antifungal drugs
• Antidepressants
• Birth control pills
• Anticlotting drugs
• Cholesterol-lowering drugs
• Drugs that suppress the immune system
• Drugs that treat breast cancer
• Epilepsy drugs (anticonvulsants)
• High blood pressure medications (anti-hypertensives), such as beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics
• Hormone replacement therapy
• Mood stabilizers
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Parkinson’s disease drugs
• Steroids
• Thyroid medications
• Weight loss drugs

Good communication with the doctor who prescribed the medication is also imperative to find out if the dosage can be reduced or stopped.  Sometimes alternative medications with fewer hair loss side effects can be substituted.

When hair loss is due to a medication you are taking, it is likely that hair growth will return to normal once the medication is discontinued.  HairCheck™ measurements can scientifically track changes in hair growth in order to determine whether hair loss is stable, getting worse or improving.

Hair loss and Chemotherapy
