Hair loss can be one of the toughest issues that people face as they age. Some of us find that we start losing our hair early; others find that we do not lose our hair until later in life. Either way, people who are starting to lose their hair can go through a vast range of emotions due to the fact that we all put such an emotional attachment to our hair. Hair is seen as a symbol of youth and strength, and this can make it extremely hard for those of us losing our hair.

It is important to understand that hair loss is something that can happen to anyone. It can happen to people who are younger, and it can happen to people who are older. Hair loss can affect men, but also can affect women. Hair loss is an issue that can affect all of us at nearly any and all ages.

Surgical procedures are one way for people to deal and cope with hair loss. They think that if they have their hair surgically replaced, they will never have to worry about hair loss again. Some people are not worried about the psychological idea behind losing hair, they simply want to make sure that they look good, and believe that they need the full head of hair to do so. One surgical procedure grafts follicles into balding areas in order to create growth. Another aims to replace follicles that may have been damaged or have gone “dormant” due to harsh chemicals or other products.

People tend to discount the many popular brands of over the counter products for stopping hair loss, dimply because they do not take them seriously. There are many people who are successful with hair loss products that are sold over the counter. These creams and chemicals stimulate hair regrowth so that hair loss id reversed by getting the follicles to continue with the natural hair growth life cycle.

Some people cope with hair loss by taking a different approach to the situation. Some will choose to wear wigs or toupees. These are very popular for hiding a balding or thinning area of the scalp. Wigs allow people to look as though they have a full head of hair, and are perfect for those who want to make sure that they look their best in public. If they feel that hair loss does not fit their image, a wig can give them a new outward image and a new inner confidence.

Some people completely embrace the fact that they are losing hair and shave it all off, completely down to the scalp. This bald look is something that many people have turned to simply because it is a look that is not artificial. Those who want to look good, but do not want to worry about hiding their hair loss will often choose this solution. This has been done mostly by men, but now even women are embracing the look.

The latest method available to improve hair output from each follicle is the laser hair comb or laser hair brush. The low level laser is cool to the touch, is regulated to only target the scalp to the depth of the follicles and takes only about an hour a week to see success. The red light stimulates the follicles to produce a thicker hair shaft in each viable follicle. This works best for thinning areas. Dead follicles can no longer produce and this does not work in that case.

People attempt to cope with hair loss in different ways. Some people will go to extremes to get their hair back. Others will use over the counter products to stop hair loss. Still others will look toward wigs or shaving in order to hide or work with their condition. Either way, people will always look for the best way for them to cope and get used to their new situation. While some of these actions may hide issues, they are still just a way for people to cope.

Why Filter Your Shower Water?

Shower filters protect your health and the health of your hair and can actually keep you from losing hair. They remove Chlorine from the water and the steam that envelops your body each time you take a shower. They soften the water to reduce soap scum and hard water deposits. They also reduce rust and other oxidized minerals in your shower water. Chlorine, soap scum, hard water and oxidized minerals are all hard on the hair that we have, and can damage the scalp and clog the pores of our present hair and inhibit new hair growth. The better question is “Why Wouldn’t we filter our Shower Water?”

How is Chlorine Harmful?

We take in up to 10 times more chlorine and other chemicals from showering than from drinking water, and the American Journal Of Public Health has documented a link between chlorine and breast, colon and bladder cancer, and has listed showering as a major percentage of this harmful exposure. When chlorine vaporizes, it combines with other airborne particles in your shower to form a chloroform gas which can be a contributor to asthma and other respiratory problems.

The U.S. EPA confirms that due to chlorine in our shower water, there is an elevated level of chloroform gas in almost every home in America today. That statistic alone is frightening. Losing hair is just one of the results of harmful chlorine we can see. It appears that it is just part of the array of health issues we face from our environment on a daily basis.

Filtered Water is Softer on Hair and Skin

More noticeable than health hazards, are the cosmetic benefits of using a shower filter. By removing the chemicals from your shower water, you notice softer skin and hair right away. Swimming in a chlorinated pool or using a chlorinated Jacuzzi or hot tub noticeably leaves your skin drier, causing flaky and itchy skin and sometimes rashes. Showering in filtered water is less drying and allows both skin and hair to retain moisture longer, which gives it a younger and healthier look and feel. In a warm shower the pores of the skin and scalp open allowing rapid absorption of chemicals including chlorine that are in the water and the surrounding vapor. Chlorine and some other harmful chemicals vaporize at a lower temperature than water and at a faster rate, so the steam that we breathe in and absorb through our skin while showering has highly concentrated levels of chlorine. Filtered shower water balances the water’s pH and keeps the harsh chemicals away from our skin and scalp, not to mention lungs, leaving skin, scalp and hair softer to the touch, and us all breathing easier! It keeps us from losing hair through drying, breakage and clogging of hair follicles.

How do Shower Filters Work?

There are 4 types of filtration methods used in shower filters. The most efficient at filtering warmer temperature water such as shower water is known as KDF (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion). KDF is a high purity copper-zinc alloy that creates a tiny electrical charge when water flows through it. This electrical charge forces free chlorine to combine with minerals in the water (calcium or other alkaline minerals) to form a harmless chloride (a chlelatable body salt). KDF also removes lead, iron and hydrogen sulfide, and inhibits the growth of bacteria, algae and fungi.

Carbon physically removes impurities from water because its surface is porous and “sticky” to the minerals that pass over it. The carbon used in shower filters must be of a high quality due to the warm water temperature.

Chlorgon is a chemical which is best combined with the KDF method as it also converts free chlorine and some combined chlorine molecules into the harmless chlorides mentioned above.

Crystals and magnets soften water by breaking up clusters of water molecules thereby reducing their size, making the water feel softer and allowing soap and shampoo to foam up more.

How do I Choose the Correct Filter?

Shower filters come in all shapes, sizes and cost levels. Some need to be replaced every 6-8 months, while others have removable filter canisters that reduce the cost and are easier to do than replacing the whole filter itself. KDF is the standard for an efficient filter, but if it is combined with other filter media it may be more effective. Shower filters alone are a great investment, but the correct shampoos, conditioners, skin products and nutrition all help to make a healthier body all around. We should use an entire system of products and health regimes to address the aging effects created by our environment. Dry skin and losing hair can be a thing of the past!
The post Shower Filters Can Keep You from Losing Your Hair? first appeared on Nutreve Hair Loss Prevention.

So both my friend and I need a treatment for thinning hair that works on all colors, types and conditions of hair. The best female hair loss treatment turns out to be the latest laser technology used in a laser hair brush. Laser hair restoration is the ingenious tool best made by Nutreve International called the Nutreve Personal Hair Therapy Laser. Its ergonomically designed laser hair brush houses 35 pulsing, low level, cool lasers that target the base of each hair follicle. Laser light stimulates the follicles to produce thicker, smoother, healthier hair which cures our thinning issue. It is this natural hair loss treatment that is light years ahead of surgeries, medications and messy topical creams that women have been using as their thinning hair treatment for years. It also is light, portable, hand-held and can be used with a hands-free stand for years of relief and beautiful hair. Rechargeable batteries mean that your purchase is a one-time deal, and no additional purchase is required! The laser hair brush also does not interfere with hair shampoos, dyes, medications or any other treatments that you may already be using or wish to try in the future, and it works on hair of any ethnicity, texture, color or condition.

We only have to use it for about 15-20 minutes every other day (hence the even easier sharing opportunity) and plan to continue use for as long as hair is in style…which as ANY gal knows, is FOREVER!!!

Every time I open a magazine or listen to TV there is a promise of effortless beauty. Really, the only version of this kind of beauty in the world is in Nature. Also beauty can really mean anything as it is truly in the eye of the beholder. However, today’s standards for most of us, male or female have gotten out of control, and we are held to not only a model pretty or handsome type, but more importantly a youthful type. Of course we can work out, wear trendier clothes, keep our weight under control and eat properly, but what we all strive for is to actually look younger that we are. Also, the newest emphasis is to do it all naturally AND effortlessly! (or at least pretend that we don’t go for botox or surgeries or spend hours under the dryer). Let’s look at some of the latest “effortless” beauty trends that include electrotherapy, laser hair therapy and surgeries!

Believe it or not you CAN put a little gadget on our cheeks that uses electrotherapy (ouch?) to beef up the muscles that attach to your cheeks so that they stay up higher and appear fuller on your face. This is a hands free device which actually looks like a set of headphones on your cheeks and just beautiful and painless on the model (unless this photo was taken with the device turned off!) No price is in the ad…not good.

Electric pulses stimulate the muscles of your abdomen which is supposed to replicate doing sit ups or other exercise. I still can’t get over the possible ouch factor, and don’t think you could walk around in public with one on and keep a straight face!

ALL of these options though definitely come with an ouch factor and not only to the body, but to the pocketbook! Also, I don’t think I would consider surgery nor the use of the requisite pain pills that go with it are really natural!

Laser hair removal is not new. Many people use it to remove hair on the arms, underarms, genitals (major ouch) and for chest and back hair. The use of this “zapping” type of laser needs to be done by a professional with the proper training and who have a very strong stomach for some of what they see! Laser hair removal can only be used on darker hairs though as it cannot easily detect lighter hairs and the process is more random, and with multiple trips and a high cost factor it is not effortless again to the purse! As each follicle is killed, the good news is that it will never grow another hair. The bad news is that it will never grow another hair…in case you change your mind or fashion goes back to the 60s. (Which it WILL, eventually)

On the other hand, laser hair restoration using cool, non detectable lasers to actually be a treatment for thinning hair is rather new on the market. It has been used in salons for some time as a female hair loss treatment, but it involved going into the salon for a 20 minute treatment every other day for months and then maybe down to once a week at the least until you decided to give up due to high gas prices, tight schedules or having everyone wonder just what WAS she doing going to that salon SO often? For men, it was even more of a question. Now, however there IS a home use device called a laser hair brush or a laser hair comb. It is made to be used every other day for 15 minutes a time and can be taken on the road as it just looks like a large paddle brush. It uses cool lasers so there is NO ouch factor, and runs on rechargeable batteries. One brand even comes with a hands-free stand so that you are not holding

So…we have made it to our 50’s! Just in time to watch our mates (and maybe ourselves) start the decade with “midlife crisis”…and also start our own body’s transformation into menopause and the realization that we have probably NOT saved enough for our retirement in our 60’s. It is not ALL doom and gloom, however. We now have a better idea of where we want to go in life, who we really are and what we like to do.

Hopefully we have great friends, family and careers that can take the “freak” out of “freak out”! In our 50’s we try to tame the grays and look for female hair loss treatments as our hair starts to thin due to the change of hormones or newly prescribed medications in our systems. How can we “stop” time?

A natural hair loss treatment starts with making sure that our bodies are continuing to take in the proper nutrition and especially enough water. Gray hairs are coarser and duller now and good cleansing shampoos and light conditioners along with making sure that we are keeping hydrated will give our hair and scalp a means of combating a quicker death of our aging hair follicles. Hydration keeps cells plump and light moisturizers and conditioners keep our skin and scalp pores from clogging. Clogged follicles are actually suffocating new hair growth! So make sure to use a shampoo without sulfates (soapy bubbles leave soapy scum!).

Another way to combat aging is to maintain a great exercise routine. This not only tones and gives our muscles a chance to fight fat, it also increases circulation. Increased circulation is one of the best treatments for thinning hair, and along with exercise a new laser hair comb is a great option to increase nutrition-rich blood to each hungry hair follicle. The new laser hair therapy for women is a simple to use (20-30 minutes every other day) hair loss treatment that is affordable and now sold for home use. I recommend the Nutreve Personal Hair Therapy Laser for all of these qualities.

The 50’s are still fraught with stressors from worry about job loss, paying for college tuition, work vs. parenting/relationship time, etc., and some of us may be given new medications to combat these problems. Medications for normal body changes such as blood pressure and cholesterol elevation, joint or back pain also seem to be the “norm” at least in all of the TV and magazine ads! Although sometime these medications are necessary and taken correctly, they do cause other symptoms such as changes in our skin and hair.

Take ANY medications responsibly and see your doctor if uncomfortable changes or symptoms come to your attention. There are natural ways to combat dry mouth, hair and skin changes. Hair regrowth drugs such as minoxidil in Rogaine are also now being used by men and women to combat hair loss. If that is the route you choose to take, the laser hair therapy for women mentioned above is also safe to use as a thinning hair treatment along with these medications.

Please consult a doctor first to rule out thyroid, anemia or other issues, but if you are just a normal 40-something, hair will start to thin and become fewer and farther between. As your scalp dries (like your skin) your hair follicles have a harder and harder time producing luscious locks. There is help, however, and the latest technology is the Personal Hair Therapy Laser by Nutreve. This laser does NOT remove hair…it stimulates the production of terminal hair (or thicker, darker shinier hair) of your youth.

It needs to be one that is not heavy as we do not want it to leave residue on our scalp to clog the very pores (follicles) that we are trying to help. We can also go in for extra oil treatments that are now referred to as “hair masks” to add shine and hydrate the hair shaft.

Watch those split ends and balding patches by the temples as a too short cut or too many layers just perpetuates these problems. Now, this laser treatment can be done at home, saving travel time, energy and gas.
Do I Need To Be Worried?

Prescription drugs can come with a big unwanted helping of side effects. You should always discuss whether or not the gain (what it does to treat the condition it was prescribed for) outweighs the loss (the side effects it can cause) with your doctor, and any possible alternative medications or treatments available.

One of those side effects for women is thinning hair and hair loss. This can effect women mentally and emotionally as well as physically. For instance, let’s say the medication causes hair loss. This can bring about feelings of stress, resentment and depression, which then can turn into to even more hair loss. This can become an unending and vicious cycle that can spiral out of control.

I Want to Help You Find the Way out of That Spiral!

There are quite a few steps women can take to slow or stop medication related hair loss. Just keep reading and I will do my best to help you get started…but remember, for medical advice, talk to your doctor. I don’t offer medical advice, just a way to help you sort through all the info out there and find what’s most pertinent for you. I know how overwhelming it can be to try and do that on your own!

The First Step in the Battle Against Hair Loss is Knowledge…

Knowing that your hair loss could be caused by the medication you take is the first step. Below are some medications of which hair loss is a known possible side effect:

Acne medications containing Vitamin A (retinoids)

Antibiotics

Anti clotting/anticoagulant drugs (blood thinners)

Anticonvulsants (seizure medications)

Antidepressants

Antifungals

Anti-inflammatory drugs (including non-steroidal types)

Beta-blockers (like those used to treat glaucoma)

Chemotherapy drugs (often leading to the anagen effluvium type of hair loss)

Cholesterol-lowering drugs

Diet/weight loss pills (and other amphetamine based pills)

Heart medications (including those for high blood pressure)

Your Medication May Be What is Causing Your Thinning Hair

Medication used to treat breast cancer

Medication used to treat gout

Medication containing hormones (i.e. birth control, hormone-replacements, and steroids)

Medication used to treat thyroid problems

Parkinson’s Disease treatment medications

This list is just a “jump start” point. If you are on any medications, and are experiencing or are worried about hair loss for women, then maybe this list can give you a starting point or at least an idea of what to discuss when you speak with your doctor.

What to do if Your Medication is what is Causing Your Hair Loss…

Once you have spoken with your doctor, and have concluded that your hair loss is a side effect of your medication(s), then it is time to move to the next step. If it is a short term medication, or you stop or change your medication, it is very likely that your hair loss will stop and the hair will regrow once you stop taking the medication (I do not recommend stopping ANY medication without speaking with your doctor first!) If not, then there are other options. Hair loss treatments are available, such as laser hair therapy, supplements, topical treatments, hair loss prevention hair care products, etc. (I will go more in depth in future blogs.) These treatments may also help those who are on long term medications that they cannot stop or change.

In my next blog I will focus in on the physical causes relating to hair loss and thinning hair in women, and the solutions that are out there. Come back and see me again!

Most women do not even consider thinning hair or hair loss until it happens to them! This could happen at age 25 or it could wait until your 70’s….but a certain amount of hair loss in women WILL HAPPEN.

In this set of articles, I would like to approach each of the potential causes of women’s hair loss and give possible hints as to what we can do to correct, reverse or deal with each. (Sorry, Men….I will get to you soon!

Understand the Plight of Women Suffering from Hair Loss

Understand the Plight of Women Suffering from Hair Loss

In the meantime, you can read these articles so that you may better understand the plight of the women in your life, and garner a little more insight into what may be on the minds of your spouse, sister, mom, co-worker, girlfriend or even your daughter.)

Hair loss can be sudden, or it can start with subtle thinning around the hairline. The reasons can be medical, physical, environmental or emotional. Losing hair may be caused by a medical condition known as Alopecia. This condition may be temporary (Alopecia Areata) or permanent (Alopecia Totalis).

Women’s hair loss may also be the result of prescribed drugs for other problems. In the area of physical reasons, there are the issues of physical trauma, burns or scarring. Environmental issues such as chemicals, radioactivity, extreme temperature or even poor diet can be a culprit.

Finally, emotional trauma can not only have our bodies negatively reacting to stress, but also contribute to hair twisting and hair pulling as nervous activities.

As you can see, not only are there four basic areas of concern, these areas interact to sometimes heighten the amount of hair loss experienced…which, in turn may lead to even more loss of hair. For example, medication may be given for a medical issue, hair is lost, the patient is physically and now emotionally stressed, depression sets in and more medicines are taken. The cycle becomes “vicious” and many of these female victims cannot find their way out.

Hopefully the following information will shed some light on not only possible causes, but possible solutions as well. Let’s get started with an overview of HOW ANY of the above causes of thinning hair or hair loss in women can happen.

How does hair grow and what causes it to stop?

How does hair grow and what causes it to stop?

Hair is formed in follicles which are “bulbs” located below the upper layer of skin. They contain the root of the growing hair shaft and are fed by elements in our blood. Proper nourishment will ensure a strong, healthy hair to grow through four phases.

There is the 3-6 year growth phase (when hair grows approximately 6 inches a year), a 1-2 week transition phase and a 5-6 week resting phase (while waiting for a new hair to form) and a return to growth phase (while the new hair grows and pushes out the old hair shaft). This can be compared to the growth of our teeth (we get baby teeth, then after a while new tooth buds form and they come up and push out the baby teeth and become our permanent teeth)…except this hair cycle continues over and over again throughout our lifetime.

Hair growth is stopped by either the closing off of the follicle, lack of nourishment to the follicle, or physical trauma to the follicle. The chemical DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is naturally occurring testosterone (good) changed by an enzyme produced in a female’s adrenal glands and ovaries to one which attaches to weak follicles and chokes them off (bad).

Natural sebum and oil buildup can also physically block the follicle. Poor blood circulation in the scalp to the root of the hair causes less “food” to be delivered to feed the follicle. Unfortunately, some trauma (physical injury) cannot be avoided, but that caused by poor habits can. This stopping or slowing and “miniaturization” of the follicles is what we see as thinning, hair loss and balding.

Normally there are about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on an adult head and we may naturally lose about 100 hairs a day with our body generating this same number of new hairs a day on a healthy head. However, with slowed growth, weakened hair shafts and dying follicles the problems begin to show.

Up Next Hair Loss in Women the Four Main Areas of Concern

My next articles will now focus on each of the four main areas of concern as to what causes hair loss in women and their interrelations…and what we can do to improve this situation. Whether it is dietary changes, hair products for hair loss, physical or medical options, they will all be explained to help you make an intelligent choice as you care for the health of your hair.

“You’re always getting boxes.”

“Okay, so what else have I got? This is Jewel Action Shower Filter. So, you put that onto the shower and it dechlorinates the shower and gets rid of other things as well to give you better water when you shower, which helps when you wash your hair. “

“Does it have a remote control? If the laser hair therapy system hasn’t got a remote control, then it’s probably safe for you to use then. Never let a woman near a remote control that’s what I’d say. So, show it to us then.”

“What else you’ve got? Is that it?”

“No, more stuff I ordered. This is the conditioner and I ordered a shampoo, and there are a couple of other things too. This stuff here, which is a CoEnzyme Amino Acid Nutrient, I can’t remember when you use it. There’s a set order in doing these things. It’s like a whole program.”
